Wright Watson and Harry Makepeace determined to locate Olivier Laverne. The first stop was the Parish Church itself, in the hope (if not the expectation) that the newly-appointed Organist and Choirmaster would be practising. The building was open, but empty, save for the cleaning ladies. Makepeace squeezed the Detective Chief Inspector’s arm and nodded ahead. The two men made their way towards the organ loft entrance.

Wright Watson cleared his throat. ‘Good morning, Mrs Grimshaw. How are you today?’

The woman took no notice and continued to polish the brass knob on the organ loft door.

‘Mrs Grimshaw, may we have a word with you?’

The polishing became ever more vigorous.
