‘Winny, please. Not till we are married.’ Martha Burchill pushed her fiancé away and stood up. He did the same, putting his arms around her as she stood by the fireplace.

‘Matty, we love each other. It is the most natural thing in the world to – to – well, you know.’

‘No Winny. Not until we have been married!’

Wyn Williams broke off his embrace and went back to the sofa.

She remained silent.

‘What’s the matter? Surely you love me! Don’t you?’

‘I do. Well, I did. But now I am not so sure.’
