‘No, Inspector. We left everything as it was when poor Burford met his end. The choir men and boys have been sent away, of course. Some of the trebles were very distressed, I can tell you. This is such a terrible blow.’ The Vicar of Halifax wrung his hands.  And shook his head.

‘This has been an awful shock, officers. By the way, I am Dr Temple Mann, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Yorbridge Cathedral. I was meant to be the adjudicator today. But – oh my – things have gone horribly wrong, have they not.’ Mann extended a hand for the Detective Chief Inspector to take and shake it.
