‘Is everything ready, Verney?’

‘It is, Vicar. I have managed to assemble twenty choir members: ten men and ten boys, with a goodly number in all four parts. They have been given the music, as instructed by Dr Mann, and they are ready to be rehearsed whenever you require them for the auditions.’

‘And a table for Dr Mann to sit at while he listens?’

‘All arranged sir. If you look over there you will see everything is set up for him behind the chapel screen. There is pen, paper and ink, and a jug of water and a glass to go with it.’

‘Thank you, Verney. I am much obliged.’

‘Very good, sir. I will station myself at the vestry door so that I can show the candidates to the organ loft.’
