Penelope waited until a few rowdy youths moved past their table. “One bloke wrote to me saying he was a lawyer and when we met I asked a question about his work and he was confused. Then he admitted he had made it up and was working as a clerk in an office. The second guy wrote about his sporting prowess and his profile included a photo which was taken ten years ago. When I met him he was bald and fat. I didn’t last the two drinks.”

“Is this why you didn’t bother trying to pursue a dialogue with me using email?”

"Precisely. It’s a waste of time. Might as well plunge in and meet the person face to face…like in the old days.”

“My era…now we’re talking. Though I wouldn’t know what to say to a woman in a pub anymore....
