Markus Doppler was in the office of Detective Inspector John McMannus at the Parramatta Police Headquarters. The office was large but cluttered with chairs and files spread liberally about the place. “Ignore the mess,” McMannus said, “There was a briefing this morning and all the conference rooms were in use. Pick a chair. Any chair.” McMannus was solidly built with a bush of grey hair and he was charged with solving the case of Gail Goodman’s murder. McMannus’ grip when they first shook hands was oddly soft for a man with such a big physique.
