The next day Tom was awakened by a loud knock. He stayed put until Susan came in to inform him that a detective was at the door. He told his daughter to invite him in and that he wouldn’t be long. He struggled up, washed his face in the ensuite and straightened the clothes he’d slept in. When he emerged from the bedroom he noted that the plains clothes policeman was standing. He was a strong looking individual despite the fact that he must have been forty or more. He had a lived-in face but still quite handsome and he was around six-foot-two and lean.

“Hi,” said Tom, “excuse my appearance.”
