Markus Doppler was reading the Sydney Morning Herald in his favourite cafe in Manly. It was 10:15am and there were plenty of tourists wandering around even on a Monday. He gazed out towards the ocean and noted the sunshine bouncing off the subtle waves. Not a good day for surfing. He returned to the paper and awaited his second coffee.

Raised voices interrupted his concentration. He looked up and saw two men standing across the footpath confronting another man, smaller and of Middle Eastern appearance. Idiots, Markus thought, didn’t they have better things to do? He returned to the book review which fascinated him. He read:

‘Catherine Hakim, a British social scientist and bestselling author who was educated in France, argues that a "sour and rigid English view" of infidelity...
