“Sorry to hear that,” said Markus wondering whether he should enquire about the circumstances. He had been to Nick’s house and had met Lyn who was a practical woman and a consummate domestic creature. She was also kind but she was no raging beauty.

“I’m better off without her. I found her cheating with a guy from my unit. He’d been over my place at a barbeque and bang… Ah, I’m not going to dwell on it.”

“Are you still in homicide?”

“Yeah. The other guy got transferred. I made sure he went to some far-away country town. The bitch followed him out there in western Victoria somewhere.”

Markus grinned at the image of a policeman and his wife in some faraway country town.
