The exterior of the house looked like it could use a coat of paint. The timber was a pale grey colour except for the eaves which were a grubby white. He pushed the iron-gate open and strode up seven steps. He noticed the door had been left ajar.

He entered. She smiled as he took in the lounge which contained a wooden table, a tall book case crammed with novels and hardcover books. More books were stacked against the wall. He slid past her. She offered him a glass of water which he accepted. She walked through to a corridor by pushing aside a curtain which acted as a divide between the front room and the rest of the house.

When she returned from the kitchen, she asked, “How long do you want to stay honey?’

“An hour,” he said.
