“He left a note,” I said.

Hope had slowly walked up to Earl and was letting him pat her head. “Where’d ya get her?”

“She found me on the way home,” I answered.

“Not much of a watchdog though,” he said.

“She’ll do fine when she settles in,” I said.

“The people behind you walked to town on Saturday and haven’t been back. So you don’t need to worry about them. Do you need anything?”
