When I meet new people and tell them I’m a librarian they tilt their head to one side and ask, “Aren’t you a little young for that?”
Apparently you can only do my job if you have grey hair. The movie stereotypes abound.
They also think all I do all day is stamp books and put them back in shelves.
I don’t stamp books anymore. The automated machines (which I call Robot One and Robot Two) stopped that. Although I do miss it. The date stamp gave a reassuringly solid thump on the paper.
Yeah alright, I do re-shelving but it’s only a small part of my role.
Last week it was international story telling and building a diverse reader community (yes, I’m working on ideas for a grant application). Today it was the pose of the child.
