There are days from I come home from work with a headache and reach for a painkiller. The noise levels, particularly with crowds of younger readers, can be overwhelming.

Today, however, the library was an oasis of calm, for the last two hours.

Boss Lady came up with the plan last week. “Nina, I want you to run a Silent Book Club on Friday afternoon.”

“We already have a book club. Do we need another one?”

She nodded. “Definitely. The Cavan county library has been running one for the last month and it’s a huge success. They’ve made it into the national papers. We can’t let them steal our thunder.”

I sighed inside. I met the head librarian from that library at the conference last year and she was a completely lovely human being....
