The library year is punctuated with annual events - Elf games at Christmas, World Book Day, the Summer Reading Stars, and plenty of other smaller events. Some are a chore, others less so.

Before the annual Book Sale comes the Great Culling of Books. I wish I could say that Linda helps with this task, but I’d be lying if I did.

She sits at the issue desk, nobly taking one for the team, or so she tells me. This leaves me free to check the catalogue for books which haven’t been used during the year. Some are classics and remain on the shelves but others have to be considered for the chop, depending on their condition, publication date etc. It’s sad to remove any stock, but at the same time I know they’ll find a new home through the book sale and it funds new acquisitions...
