“Why do you always overthink things, Nina?” Linda asked me today at the issue desk.

“I don’t.”

“Yes you do. You make up stories for all the people who visit the library. You can’t just read a book, you have to review it and dissect it at book club. You took ages to admit you liked Alex and start dating him.”

“I liked Alex as a friend first.”

She blew out a derisive snort. “Yeah, sure you did. That’s why it always took you twenty minutes to request one book on Inter Library Loan.”

“That’s not true.”

She raised an eyebrow in my direction.

I held up my hands in defeat. “OK that’s a bit true, but having a strong relationship with Library HQ staff is important.”
