Linda’s strange behaviour continued for the rest of the week. Her pattern of staring at me and popping up in odd places around the building was getting to me. Linda isn’t a standard librarian by any means but she had gone to the next level. I’d checked with Boss Lady, who was unconcerned, and I was considering a phone call to Linda’s husband in case she was unwell or had some terrible worry going on at home.

The day after the whole “let’s stare at Nina while she repairs book spines” incident, I caught her peering into my bag under the desk. That was a step too far. “Linda, what are you doing?”

She jumped back, banging her knee in the process. “Sorry, Nina, I dropped my pen and I think it fell into your bag.”
