When I was a little girl my teacher had a rule about birthdays. She gave no homework to any child whose birthday fell on a school day. If it fell on a weekend you got a pass for Monday’s work and if it fell during the summer holidays you got a pass for the last day of homework before the break.

I loved the idea. Sadly I never encountered another teacher with the same kindness. Birthday days off don’t exist in Library Land either. I considered using one of my precious annual leave days for the 13th of May this year but I’m saving them for a trip to Scotland in September with my book club gang.
