Two days after Saint Patrick’s Day, the inevitable happened. Boss Lady caught Linda messing with the library heating thermostat. Linda has been adjusting it upwards every morning, and downwards again every evening since last October (our boss checks the setting each evening when she is leaving the building). Linda claims Boss Lady wants us all to freeze to death and she’s not paid enough to get frostbite while checking out books to people who can never remember the author’s name of the book they want.

Boss Lady wasn’t impressed. “You are not authorised to adjust the heating controls in the library, Linda. That is in my purview and is subject to strict budgetary controls. If HQ hears about this and how it’s been inflating our branch budget, there will be hell to pay. Do you want me to...
