Today was a Red Letter Day in the library. It’s National Library Open Day and as you might expect Boss Lady was all over this from the moment it was proposed, last autumn. She sent us a flurry of memos, held multiple project meetings, made us do a mind map, and told us no idea was too bad to mention.

She was wrong. Linda’s idea of hiring an ice-cream van to provide cones of vanilla ice-cream to all the kids in the town would have covered every picture book in a twenty mile radius with melted dairy.

Every time another branch announced their plans for the day she arrived at our desk, issuing orders and trying to ensure our Open Day would out-shine all others. This was impossible as

a) we only have me and Linda to implement any plan
b) our budget was close to zero
...
