New library members are an elusive species. When Boss Lady plonked a membership recruitment drive on my task list last month I consulted with Linda over tea and chocolate biscuits.

“New members, how do we get those?”

Linda shrugged. “I’m so glad she gave you that one.”

“Why?”

“She gets notions about this about once a year, usually in January. I think her performance review with her boss is in February.” Linda dunked a cookie in her tea, a lump fell off.

“That figures. So what do I do?”

“You have a few options, and I should know because she got me to do it the last three years.”

“Perfect”
