Every year in January we remove some books from the shelves. This makes room for new stock. Those pesky authors keep writing new books. It is also run as a fundraiser to pay for new acquisitions because our new books budget is insanely low considering most people believe a library’s main purpose is to provide books to readers.
We also have to remove books which are in bad condition. I’m pretty good at book repair, but there’s a limit to our skills and you’d be amazed how short a shelf life a popular picture book has. As for pop-up books, those are usually dead in under three months thanks to over-enthusiastic toddlers.
