It’s Christmas in the library, a time of year I’ve never experienced before in this way.

I worked retail jobs at this time of year when I was studying and the thing I hated the most, quite apart from stressed out pushy customers, was the incessant Cheerful Christmas Music. The recordings are on a loop. After an hour, or if you’re really lucky two, they start again and eventually the entire set list is embedded so deeply in your brain that you will find yourself humming them, in June.

Anyhow, the good news about libraries at Christmas is that they are a safe haven from musical torture. In fact, I’ve even caught myself humming the odd bar or two of popular carols this week with some degree of enjoyment. Perhaps I’m not a total Scrooge after all?
