Today we had our quarterly book-ordering meeting. Boss Lady runs book ordering policy and procurements. What this means in reality is that she pontificates about “meeting key objectives”, “maintaining quality levels”, and “the imperatives of library science in a modern recreational and continuing education paradigm” but that when it comes to actually choosing the books Linda gets her way and I end up using the ordering system and chasing up the individual publishers.

I guessed it might be like that, but today’s meeting brought the entire process into sharp focus for me.

Boss Lady scheduled it for a two hour slot after the library closed and for once Linda didn’t slip off early to get home in time for her favourite soap opera on TV. She did, however, close the library...
