Beth paused. “Who else is going to be there?”

“Oh, you know, just a few people from work. Shelly and her boyfriend. Marcus and his husband. And Dan’s friend and his girlfriend.”

Beth considered it. She was used to being Jen and Dan’s third wheel. But being their… fifth… seventh… ninth wheel? The only single person at their little get-together?

“You know,” she began, stretching out her legs and propping her feet up on the coffee table, “I’m already in my pajamas. I was thinking this was just going to be a lazy evening at home.”

“Really?” Jen’s voice bordered near a whine. “Are you sure? It’s backyard movie night!...
