“Nope,” she said. “Not really. Do you ever run in any races?” she asked.

“I do the Marine Corps Marathon every year,” he said. “And I’ve got three triathlons under my belt.”

“What’s a triathlon?” she asked. “That’s run, bike, and swim, right?”

“Actually, it’s swim first, then bike, and then run.”

“Oh.” She couldn’t imagine doing the first two and then being expected to run. “How far?”

“The swim is one point five K, the bike is forty K, and a ten K run.”

“Oh,” she repeated. There was no way she could do that. She decided to change the subject. “Where do you work?”
