Narissa’s dark hair tickled Poppy’s long ears. The faerie stood on Narissa’s shoulder, leaning against her neck. A pained frown tainted her thin lips. 

“This is a disaster,” Poppy murmured. 

She looked up at Narissa. There was devastation on her friend’s face. Her lips parted but she didn’t speak. 

Poppy fluttered her wings, the twinkling of bells sounding into the early dawn morning, and she flew over to inspect the creature before them. It still had the sweet eyes of their friend, but… “Roman? Is that really you?” She reached out and put her hands on the unicorn’s black fuzzy snout, trying to connect to the friend that she knew was in there somewhere.
