The water was stained red with the blood of mermaids.

Marlowe pushed her powerful burgundy tail up towards the surface. It was hard to see through the diluted blood, and she squinted her dark green eyes. The warm waters rushed passed her. She knew she was getting closer by the brightness of the sun streaking through the waves and glinting off of her crystal spear. It was never this bright in the kingdom of Alryia. She flipped her tail one more time, breaking through the surface.

The cool morning air hit her wet body and she shivered. Her navy blue hair stuck to her face and neck in clumps, and she ran her hands through it to pull the strands out of her eyes.
