The dragon landed skillfully and gently, and used its tail to help Narissa to the ground. It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the darkness, but when she was able to see better, she inhaled sharply. The shattered remnants of thick white dragon eggs were scattered near the back of the cavern, a viscous blue goo pooled around them. The dragon’s nose touched Narissa’s back, prodding her forward to make sure that she saw all of the damage that had been done.

She hesitated before turning back to the dragon. There were tears in both of their eyes, and Narissa nodded. “These were your babies?” she asked it softly.
