Paisley and Rori were making pasta. Paisley laughed at something Rori said, when her phone started vibrating. She looked at the name on the screen. It read, “Mom”. She excused herself, not knowing if she should feel excited or panicked, and went out to the patio.
“Hello? Mom?”
“Paisley. How are you?” her mother asked.
“I’m okay.”
“I’m glad to hear that. We’ve been worried about you. We’re sorry, Paisley.”
She didn’t say anything and stayed quiet. Her mother continued.
“We shouldn’t have thrown you out. Your father eventually said we should contact you. I guess he couldn’t handle me crying over you at night. It hasn’t been the same without you.”
