“Please, I can do anything,” I said. “I can mop the floors if I had to. Clean the windows. Anything.”
The matron’s face didn’t soften.
“Like I said, we don’t have any jobs at the hospital.”
“Please consider.”
“Sorry, we can’t,” she said and walked away. Shoulders slumped, running my fingers through my hair furiously, I stood there not wanting to leave. Not wanting to admit defeat. I’d been trying to search for work the whole day and no one wanted to give me a job. Even though I was dressed well they still looked down on me. Did I give off a vibe of being good for nothing? Was it that visible?
