I found mom in the kitchen making lemonade. I kissed her gently on the cheek and she smiled at me.

“What did you tell him today?” She asked.

“Not much. Just about someone at school.”

She looked worried.

“Are they bullying you again?”

“Momma, don’t worry about it. I’m fine.”

She cupped my cheek.

“One day I’ll take you away from here. I just can’t right now, you know that?”
