We were invited over for supper by my parents. I knew my uncle and aunt were also going to be there. It went well at first and I started to feel like perhaps my relationship with my parents wasn’t completely hopeless. I hoped that in future I might be able to tell them the truth after all. 

But then my uncle turned to Shawn. 

“You know, I never thought you’d get married. I always thought you were a little faggot.”

My parents only laughed with. 

“Uncle,” I said carefully.

I could see the hurt on Shawn’s face. He didn’t say anything. 

For the rest of the night my parents and my uncle made remarks about gay people, remarks that hurt and were terrible. I felt like taking Shawn away from there. Li...
