Pregnant.

I never thought I’d hear that word as a recent high school graduate. As a girl who’s about to start her first job. As a girl with traditional parents that would kick her out if they ever heard that word come from her mouth. 

“No, there must be a mistake.”

“I’m sorry, Anya. The results are accurate. You are pregnant,” the doctor said. 

I heard sympathy in her voice but I didn’t care. This couldn’t be happening. Not to me. Anyone but me. 

“My parents are going to kill me.”

“I’m sure they’ll understand. Parents aren’t the way they used to be. Times are changing.”
