he screamed a torrent of epithets at Luciana, he pulled his revolver and took aim. At that point, Ignacio took aim with his Winchester and fired twice. Both shots hit the man in the chest, and he tumbled backward and fell under the wagon. The noise frightened the mules, and they lurched ahead, causing the right rear wheel to pass over the man's chest and neck.

By this time, Luciana had stopped running and was looking to see who had just shot her captor. Ignacio stood up, waved his rifle, and shouted in Spanish. Then he and Jarini, climbed aboard their horses and moved down the hill to the wagon. Luciana had already returned to the wagon, and as Ignacio and Jarini rode up, she bent down and sliced off both of the man's ears with the knife she had pulled from his chest.
