In the distance, I could see brown hills rising up from the New Mexico scrub. It reminded me a lot of the terrain around Tombstone. Watching the ground flash by outside the window made me wonder if all of us were not rushing headlong into some irreversible calamity. That thought caused me to turn my attention from the outside to the inside of the car. The day coach we were in looked about the same as the one I traveled in ten years ago from Lawrence to Dodge City. It was about seventy feet long, with lots of dark wood paneling and a carpet on the floor. We were sitting in the back of the car. In front of us there looked to be about twenty people scattered about.
