"Ain't nothin' out here 'cept our mounts," he said. "Go see, dammit!"
After two or three minutes, one of the men still in the kitchen yelled out the back door, "What's takin' so damned long?"
There was no answer.
The two men still standing in the kitchen looked at one another. Then they grabbed my mother and held her between them and walked out the back door, the flour sacks still on their heads. The backyard was empty.
"Where the hell's Hiley," asked one of the men.
"Shut up! Ain't you got sumthin' under your hat but hair?" the group's leader growled. "No names, remember?"
