It was Christmas Eve and like most nights for George, he was the last one to leave the office at the Daily News. In the weeks following the fight, there was much talk about the new and more determined Billy Miske. Rumors started to go around about a fourth fight between him and Jack Dempsey and George took many calls from reporters around the country about the chances Billy had for another title fight. He told them all the same thing, “That’s something you’ll have to talk to Billy Miske about, but as far as I’m concerned he is and was always a champion.”

Billy spent a few days in the hospital for his injuries. He made sure that Doctor Hereford was his attending physician in order to keep the news of his disease a secret. George visited him a few times, always making sure...
