Close to downtown central East London there is an abandoned car park, surrounded by high bushes with weeds pushing through the concrete. It is protected from the sight of motorists by a rusted old fence, which had grown a jacket of creeping weeds and vines over the years. It was mostly used by learner drivers during the day and at night as a “safe” place for the prostitutes who patrolled the street corners on Oxford Street to take their johns for business. I arrived there in the in-between period, after the hookers had already gone home, and before the young drivers would arrive with their fathers or instructors.
