Durban, which is a Zulu phrase meaning bay or lagoon, is the largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, and is the third largest city in South Africa. It is situated approximately 630 kilometers from East London, along the N2. To get there we had to drive through the old Transkei area of the Eastern Cape, which used to be an independent homeland. The towns in the old Transkei were very rundown, very poor, and very dirty. The biggest of these was Umtata, which lay almost smack bang in the middle between East London and Durban. It was about a two and a half hour drive to Umtata, and as we entered the N2 Freeway from the Beacon Bay off-ramp, so I settled down in my seat for the long drive.
