Aly looked appalled, “In a hospital?  In a labor room?”

“Yeah.  Both of them were pretty much chimneys.  Katrina Lawler threatened to go outside for a smoke if they wouldn’t let her have one there.  Sara said she was already eight centimeters.”

“Dear Lord.”

AJ looked back and forth from Aly to me.  She asked me, real slow, “You mean that Annie’s problems maybe came from her parents smoking?”

I nodded.  “There’s a good chance.”

She frowned.  “But didn’t they know they were hurting her?”

“Sometimes the cigarettes are more important to the parents than their children are.”...
