Chapter 14




We slid out the back door. It was nice and dark under the little roof that covered the stoop – I’d turned off the light earlier, after I’d talked to Bree on the landline. I leaned against the wall, pulling Aly close, but concentrating on scanning the area. I didn’t see anything moving, at least not anything I thought I had to worry about.

There was a light breeze in the trees, but no foliage moving out of sync with the rest. I watched for a couple of minutes, just to make sure. Wearing a white shirt, I could have done without the full moon. On the flip side, moonlight would make it easier to detect something metal where it shouldn’t be.

Being left handed, I kind of tucked Aly under my right arm....
