Captain Zeiss rose. “Well, it seems as if matters are well in hand. I’m going home. And in the morning, I’m leaving for Aruba with my wife.” With a nod to each of us, he left.
Chief Wannamaker watched him go out the door. Finally, he rose himself. “I think it best for all concerned if I am no longer involved. Plausible deniability.” He walked to Aly and took her hand in both of his. “My dear, I am sorry for your loss.” He patted her hand gently. “I understand that David was not the man your grandfather hoped he would be, but, all that aside, I am sorry for your loss.”
“Thank you,” she said. “You are very kind.”
