Chapter 5

         I sprint out of the double doors and down the hallway not even bothering to look in the lab to see if Jude notices me when I pass.  I don’t stop until I reach the elevator, smashing my palm against the down indicator button repeatedly until the door slides open and I nearly leap inside.  Pressing the button for the first floor, I position myself against the back wall of the elevator and slide down to the floor.

I realize that I still have the syringe from the procedure room in my hand and it’s dropped unceremoniously to the clean purple-carpeted elevator floor.  Too cramped. I never realized how small this elevator is. I’m hyperventilating. Have to control my breathing. I clutch my chest and try d...
