As Kaira and Shal walked out of the king’s tent, a heavy pall fell over the land. The Luthanians stood silent, the shouts of jubilation over their victory quelled by the announcement of Prince Alexander’s death. Above, the sky was turning violet, indicating the day was coming to an end.

Kaira felt numb all over. Was the prince really dead? It just did not seem real, somehow.

Birjanji trotted over to her and looked her in the eye. “The prince is dead?” a somber voice asked.

She nodded. “Yes, there was nothing that could be done. I just can’t believe he’s gone. I shall really miss him.”

“Well done Kaira,” a familiar voice said and Kaira turned to look at the Great Lady.
