Kaira gave a slight nod and took slow steps toward the manticores. The rumbling, engine-like sounds grew even louder. She tried to steady the nerves in her stomach. I am out of my mind. I can’t believe I’m doing this. I hope I do know what I’m doing.

A few of the manticores raised their tails in a threatening manner and Kaira slowed her step. Most, however, were staring at her as if they couldn’t believe she was putting herself in further danger.
