The sun beat down on Kaira and her group without mercy as they struggled along the bare mountain ridge. Giska was now walking in front of Birjanji since she did not have the energy to fly. No one spoke—they were too dry-mouthed to try. The water and food had run out, despite Jonathan’s best efforts.

Kaira leaned against Birjanji’s side, forcing herself to put one foot in front of the other.
