Kaira jumped off the white and black stallion, and ran over to the gaping hole that had appeared where Shal and Runley were only a moment before. “Shal!”

Lance followed Kaira’s actions and put his arms around her to keep her from following her best friend into the rupture as the others halted their horses and dismounted. They joined Lance and Kaira around the opening, from which no sound was coming.

The Shephold brothers got down on their bellies and lay near the edge. “Shal!” the oldest, William, called. “Can you hear me?” He leaned his head over the opening and lowered it to listen for any sound.
