“Mysteria,” George repeated. “Who is Mysteria?”

“Lord DuPraye’s mother,” Kaira told him.

“A cognate?” Lance asked as the prince’s eyes looked suddenly worried. “You are sure that is what she said?”

Kaira nodded. “What’s wrong?”

Lance’s eyes grew dark and serious. “If she is a cognate, this is not good news.”

“What is a cognate?” Shal asked.

“A cognate is someone who has the ability to control minds,” Lance explained. “Cognates are very rare—they appear usually once every hundred years or so.”

“Control minds?” Shal asked, her mouth opening in shock.

Lance nodded. “Yes. A cognate is very dangerous—no wonder Sir DuPraye marrie...
