Kaira opened her eyes tiredly. Sighing, she turned her eyes to the open window. After Lance left her at her door last night, she was unable to sleep right away; she was thinking about the coming war. Now that she accepted her role (whatever that was), her mind was filled with Lord DuPraye, and the things she saw and heard at the Moribundian fortress. She must find out what sort of ‘beasts’ the Moribundians were making and the mystery of the Shamace.

“Was there really an assassin in the castle last night?” Shal’s voice asked, startling her.

Kaira turned her troubled eyes from the window. “Yes.”

The redhead came over to the bed and sat down on the edge of it, worry and fear in her eyes. “And you saw it all.”
