The Luthanian castle became a center of activity over the next several days as troops of soldiers arrived from surrounding kingdoms and provinces. Everywhere, there was evidence of a country preparing for war. The women spent their time making feathered arrows, sewing uniforms, and feeding the growing number of men. Smoke bellowed from the forge throughout the day as it produced swords, pikes, spears, maces, spiked iron balls, and daggers. Cartloads of supplies constantly wheeled through the castle gate amid mounted knights, foot soldiers, and bowmen who were coming to King Alfred’s aid.
